McAfee
McAfee Antivirus will detect and remove unwanted viruses from your computer. This program has two different modes in which it may be ran. One mode will automatically scan your C: drive with the most common settings, while the other will give you custom control over which drive to scan, how to scan, what to do if a virus is detected, etc. The scan C: choice from the menu will do the same as the custom scan choice if you configure your settings as follows:
Before running the virus scan, you will be presented with the following choices:
You may download the most current virus definitions from McAfee if you have internet access. If you choose to download the most current signatures, they will reside on your hard drive in the C:\MCAFEE directory. If you want to scan your hard drive a second time, perhaps the same day, rather than repeating the same download, you are given the option to choose the virus signatures which you previously downloaded.
How to
upgrade virus signatures if your only
internet access is through a dial-up modem.
1) Connect to the internet in
your usual fashion using your dial-up modem.
2) Insert the CD into the drive and wait until the GO
button appears on top of the START button.
3) Start the McAfee antivirus program and choose [1] as pictured in the
figure above.
4) After download is complete and virus scanning begins, abort the operation by
clicking "X" to close the window. You must do this because until you actually
boot from the CD, viruses may be active and impossible to delete!
5) Boot the computer from Alan's Ultimate Boot CD and start McAfee antivirus.
6) The newest virus definitions will reside on your hard drive, so choose [3] as
pictured in the figure above.
